My 3 Things - Coach Calls Timeout

Time for Self-Reflection

Below is a download that helps coaches focus and reflect on the type of coach they want to be. There are three questions:

  1. What do I want to be known for as a coach?
  2. What do I want my teams to be known for?
  3. What do I need to get better at?

Take a few minutes to remember what you valued in past coaches. What do you want to be valued for?

Don’t just stop there. How are you going to achieve your three things? Is there anything you need to do differently to get there?

Question 3 can be tough to answer. You may want to ask parents or players that you’ve worked with. Are there any criticisms that you’ve faced in the past? Is there any truth to those? How do you plan to get better? Clinics, research, write in a journal, review game film, etc.

Once you’ve completed this sheet, review it often and let it guide your decisions going forward. Coaches and teams that do one thing really well enjoy more success than coaches and teams that are scattered.
