5 Out vs Man – Motion Offense

5 Out vs Man – Motion Offense

This is a four step motion offense. For younger age groups Progression 1 and Progression 2 will be enough for your motion offense. Once you feel your team has a strong hold on the concepts and movements (at game speed) of Progression 1, move on to the next phase.

PROGRESSION 1: Basket Cuts

Keys to success for Progression 1: Three helpful tips…

  1. CUTS: Players must cut to the basket over top of the defender (between their defender and the ball) so they are available for a pass.
  2. ROTATION: The passer cuts to the basket then fills the corner opposite of the ball path. If they passed to their left, they are cutting then filling the right corner, and vise versa. Players filling other spots following the path of the ball. If you are in front of the pass you stay in your spot.
  3. ATTACKING: If a player can beat their defender off the dribble, go for it – we’ve created all that space in the middle of the court for a reason.

PROGRESSION 2: Screen Away

Move on to this Progression when your team consistently makes the correct cuts and rotations in Progression 1.

Keys to success for Progression 2: Decide if your team is ready for two options on each screen or if you want them to just curl off each screen to keep it simple. It’s important to practice this screening action and show players what options they have and how to read the defense. This drill is a good one to get comfortable with this screening action.

PROGRESSION 3: Ball Screens

Move on to this Progression when your team consistently makes the correct cuts and rotations in Progressions 1 and 2. For most youth teams, Progressions 1 and 2 will be a good motion offense to use.

Keys to success for Progression 3: Understanding each player’s skillset is critical for this Progression. If a player is not comfortable dribbling under pressure or making quick decisions with the ball they should practice those skills before receiving ball screens.

PROGRESSION 4: Dribble At Teammate

Move on to this Progression when your team consistently makes the correct cuts and rotations in Progressions 1, 2 and 3. For most youth teams, Progressions 1 and 2 will be a good motion offense to use.

Keys to success for Progression 4: This option is great to use when playing a defense that likes to pressure the ball and deny passes making it difficult to pass to the nearest teammates.
